Healthy Habits to Kick Off the New Year
The new year is an opportune time to think about your health goals for the year ahead. Going into the new year is a chance to reset and think of the new possibilities ahead. While big resolutions can be exciting, lasting change usually comes from small, healthy habits that support your body and mind over time. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on progress and habits that fit your real life with the following helpful tips.
1. Start with Small, Realistic Goals–It is often easier to stick to smaller, more realistic goals and once these new habits you created are part of your normal routine, you will be able to build on them and set new goals.
Try things like this:
- Drinking an extra glass of water each day
- Going to bed 15 minutes earlier
- Taking a 10–15-minute walk after school or work
2. Move Your Body in Ways You Enjoy-Exercise can come in many different forms, not just intense workouts or long gym sessions. Find things you enjoy and make those part of your movement goals. Dancing, playing a sport, going for a walk, stretching or even cleaning the house can all count. Think of options you can do throughout the day to reach our movement goal. Movement should feel good and ultimately be a part of your daily routine. The key is consistency and finding things you enjoy doing!
3. Prioritize Sleep-Sleep is an important part of having a healthy lifestyle. Getting enough rest helps with focus, mood, energy, and overall health. Try creating a simple nighttime routine like turning off screens earlier or reading before bed to help your body wind down. 4. Practice Healthy Eating Habits – Do not Worry About Being Perfect- Healthy eating is not about strict rules or cutting out entire food groups. Meal planning and Prepping can help keep you on a healthy eating routine.
Aim for balance:
- Include fruits and vegetables – make your plate colorful
- Eat regular meals – avoid skipping meals
- Listen to your hunger and fullness cues
5. Take Care of Your Mental Health-A healthy year should include both mind and body. To keep your mind healthy, creating simple habits like journaling, talking to someone you trust, or taking short breaks during the day can make a big difference in relieving stress and keeping a healthy focus.
6. Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others-The start of the year often comes with social media posts about “perfect” routines and big achievements. Remember: everyone’s journey is different. Focus on what works for you personally and what will help you achieve your goals.
7. Be Kind to Yourself-You will have days that do not go as expected and that is normal. Missing a workout, sleeping in, or eating differently than planned does not mean you failed. Healthy habits are built over time, so get back at it the next day and keep working toward your goals.
With the new year comes a sense of renewal and it is the perfect time to set realistic goals. Choose goals that make you feel stronger, calmer, and healthier. Be supportive of yourself with each small step forward. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year ahead!
