Understanding Asthma and Allergies

by Jennifer Riggs, Ph.D., RRT

Every May, we observe National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about these common conditions affecting millions worldwide. Asthma and allergies can impact daily life, making understanding their causes, symptoms, and treatments essential.

What Are Asthma and Allergies?

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that causes inflammation and airways narrowing, making breathing difficult. Common symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Triggers for asthma attacks vary, including pollen, dust, smoke, exercise, and strong emotions.

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless substances, such as pollen, pet dander, mold, or certain foods. This reaction can lead to symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, skin rashes, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis—a life-threatening allergic reaction.

How to Manage Asthma and Allergies

While asthma and allergies cannot be cured, they can be effectively managed through medication and lifestyle adjustments. Here are some key strategies:

  • Avoid Triggers: Identify and reduce exposure to common triggers, such as pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander.
  • Medication: Inhalers, antihistamines, and allergy shots (immunotherapy) can help control symptoms and prevent attacks.
  • Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of symptoms and use a peak flow meter to measure lung function for asthma management.
  • Create an Action Plan: Work with a doctor to develop a personalized asthma or allergy action plan.

Raising Awareness and Supporting Others

During National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, you can take part in spreading awareness by:

  • Educating others about asthma and allergies.
  • Encouraging those affected to seek medical advice.
  • Supporting organizations that provide research and resources for people living with these conditions.

By increasing awareness and promoting effective management strategies, we can help improve the quality of life for those with asthma and allergies. This May, take a moment to learn, share, and support efforts to make breathing easier for everyone!
