Lung Leavin’ Day: A Day of Strength, Reflection, and Awareness

by By Jennifer Riggs, Ph.D., RRT

Every year on February 2nd, people worldwide observe Lung Leavin’ Day, a unique and powerful event celebrating resilience, courage, and hope in the face of adversity. But what is Lung Leavin’ Day, and why does it matter? Let’s explore the history and meaning behind this extraordinary day.

The Story Behind Lung Leavin’ Day

Lung Leavin’ Day was inspired by the journey of Heather Von St. James. She is a survivor of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure. In 2005, just three months after giving birth to her daughter, Heather was diagnosed with the disease and given a bleak prognosis. Her only chance of survival was a radical surgery for that time, which involved the removal of one of her lungs.

The surgery was a success, and Heather’s courage and determination became the foundation for Lung Leavin’ Day. The name comes from Heather’s playful acknowledgment of the day her lung “left” her body—a symbol of survival and a reminder to embrace life despite its challenges.

How It is Celebrated

Lung Leavin’ Day is more than just a personal milestone for Heather. It has grown into a day of community and reflection. Here are some of the ways people participate:

Writing and Burning Fears

The heart of the celebration involves writing fears, doubts, or negative thoughts on paper and then burning them in a fire. This ritual symbolizes letting go of the things that hold us back and embracing strength and positivity.

Raising Awareness

Lung Leavin’ Day is an opportunity to educate others about mesothelioma, the dangers of asbestos, and the importance of advocacy for those affected by this disease.

Supporting Others

Whether through donations to mesothelioma research, sharing stories of resilience, or simply standing in solidarity with those battling illness, the day fosters a sense of community and support.

Why It Matters

This day is a reminder that even in the face of life’s darkest moments, there is light. It encourages us to:

  • Confront our fears and move past them.
  • Celebrate the strength and courage of survivors and their families.
  • Spread awareness about preventable health risks, such as asbestos exposure.

How You Can Get Involved

Here are some simple ways to join the movement, even if you are not directly affected by mesothelioma:

  • Host Your Own Ritual: Gather with friends or family to write down and burn your fears.
  • Share the Message: Use social media to spread awareness about the day and the dangers of asbestos.
  • Support Mesothelioma Research: Consider donating to organizations dedicated to finding a cure and supporting patients.

Lung Leavin’ Day is a powerful example of how one person’s journey can inspire a global movement. By facing our fears, supporting others, and spreading awareness, we can all be part of this incredible day of hope and transformation.
