May has been named “National Physical Fitness and Sports Month” in the United States since 1983. It was started by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition with a goal to promote health and physical fitness by motivating people to be active. There are many potential benefits from physical activity including improved cardiovascular health, increased energy levels, weight and blood sugar management, bone and joint health, and an improved sense of general wellbeing! No matter one’s fitness level, we can all benefit from moving our bodies! Here are five simple ways to start increasing your daily activity!

  1. Start slow: It can sometimes be discouraging and a barrier for some people to think that to “get fit” then need to begin a rigorous workout routine at the gym. However, something as simple as going on a walk or playing at a park as a family can be great forms of activity. It is important to increase your physical activity slowly and not all at once to avoid overexertion and injury.
  2. Keep it fun: Finding types of physical activity that you enjoy is key to being able to make it a long-term lifestyle change. Consider trying out different classes at your local fitness center, swimming, cycling or even dance! Don’t be afraid to try something new… you may find you really enjoy it!
  3. Work it into your day: Physical activity does not always have to be “exercise” to still count! Look for ways to be more active throughout your day. Park a little farther away at work and the grocery store, make an extra trip to unload the groceries, even household cleaning and chores can count!
  4. Step it up: Going along with Tip #3… set a step goal each day! If you are someone that struggles to find time to “workout” in your busy schedule, setting a step goal that you can work on throughout your day can be a great way to increase your physical activity. Consider obtaining a fitness tracker and setting a step goal to reach each day. Remember to start low and increase your goal slowly over time!
  5. When the weather doesn’t permit: It can be challenging to stay active during seasons of extreme cold, heat, or rain. Having a plan in place for what to do when the weather turns bad can help you stay on track with your fitness goals. Consider going to an indoor location, such as a shopping center, and walking laps inside the facility. There are also free exercise videos available online on sites such as YouTube and others that you can use from the comfort of your own home!

So, this month, make sure to move and have fun with it! Whether you choose to join your local gym, walk your dog at a park, or go on a hike with a friend, there are lots of great ways to get your steps in and stay active!
