Nilda is a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator who has been working in the field of diabetes management and education for the past 8 years. She helped fill the need for a Spanish speaking educator at an FQHCC (Federally Qualified Health Care Clinic). The clinic had a huge population of underserved Spanish speaking patients and needed a nurse who could speak to the patients in their own language. Nilda fell in love, not only with these patients, but also with the knowledge that her patients were achieving what they had been unable to achieve before – better control of their lives because of better control of their diabetes. When one of her patients came to say goodbye because he was moving, and he said to her, “you changed my life and I will never forget you as long as I live” – she was hooked. She wanted to make this her life’s work- changing people’s lives by educating them.
She has worked in numerous settings including an outpatient hospital based diabetes center where she taught Diabetes Self-Management classes and managed patients with Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. She has also worked at a FQHHC, and in community outreach with the Latino community. Working with the Hispanic population is her passion because, as she says, “I get them, I know them, I’m one of them”.
